“Machine learning in an audiological application”
Recently, machine learning applications entered the field of signal processing in hearing aids for the first time. Hence, such systems are capable of predicting relevant sound characteristics via an algorithm. This algorithm is based on individual sound intentions that can be perceived by the user in real life.
Machine learning operates in a predefined range. Within this frame, the machine learning feature will learn the hearing aid user’s individual “taste of sound” depending on the specific listening environment. It is important to note that a machine learning system always depends on the input provided by the users. However, the audiologist’s fine tuning is, and remains, the relevant basis for high-quality and successful hearing aid fittings. An application of machine learning technology allows a direct sound adjustment via real-time evaluation in real life. Thus, the development of this technology will provide huge benefits both for audiologists and hearing aid users.
